Scrambling
"Scrambling is a method of ascending rocky faces and ridges. It is an ambiguous term that lies somewhere between hill walking and rock climbing. It is often distinguished from hillwalking by defining a scramble as a route where hands must be used in the ascent. There is less to distinguish it from climbing, with many easy climbs sometimes referred to as difficult scrambles."

Scrambles are graded from 1 to 3. Grade 1 is unlikely to require a rope but would involve steep and often exposed ground, where good route choice is important. Grade 2 requires the use of a rope and elementary rock climbing skills to negotiate steeper ridges and gullies. Grade 3 is continuous steep scrambing and a rope is used throughout. A head for heights and some hill walking experience is required for all our scrambling courses.
Our Courses (all costs are per person):
Beginner This course introduces the hill walker to scrambling by traversing some classic Grade 1 terrain such as the North Ridge of Tryfan and the Crib Goch Ridge. The routes will cover some exposed and spectacular terrain en route to the summits.
Instruction Ratio 1:3
Intermediate For those with some scrambling or rock climbing experience, this is a chance to traverse more challenging and exposed Grade 2 terrain such as Bristly Ridge or the Amphitheatre at Craig yr Ysfa.
Instruction Ratio 1:2
Advanced This course is an unashamed Grade 3 bash for the experienced scrambler or climber. This 3-day course aims to cover as much Grade 3 terrain as possible by linking routes to provide day long traverses of mountain groups. An example itinerary might be Milestone Buttress Approach and Milestone Continuation then onto the Heather Terrace to ascend Nor' Nor' Buttress Variant to the summit of Tryfan. Options thereafter could include descending into Cwm Bochlwyd to finish up Dolmen Ridge on Glyder Fach before making a final (and leisurely) descent of the Gribn Ridge.
